Tennis courts, particularly lawn courts, are located in most major towns and are also a popular feature of many of the motels and resorts within the region.

Clay target shooting is big in Renmark, Waikerie and Loxton with regular competitions hosted by the SA Field and Game Association. Renmark, Barmera and Waikerie all feature Skate Parks to get the adrenalin pumping.

For those dedicated travellers wishing to maintain their workout regime Berri offers a 24 hour 7 day a week gym.

A perfect way to see the river; cruises range in duration and operate from a number of Riverland towns, including Renmark, Berri and Kingston-on-Murray. Choose from an historic paddle-steamer, the latest in nautical cruising vessels or a small dinghy ideal for accessing the narrow creeks.

The PS Industry offers a unique cruising experience when it fires up on the first Sunday of every month. Contact the Renmark Visitor Information Centre for details of their special cruise events.

With thousands of kilometres of winding creeks and red gum lined waterways, experience nature in the silence of canoes and kayaks. Discover an abundance of birdlife on one of the signature sunrise or sunset tours with local operators, or plan your own expedition for a day or more.

One of the most popular ways to cruise the Murray River is to hire a luxury houseboat. Offering both accommodation and transport, these purpose-built vessels give you the freedom to explore. See the wide stretches of the river’s spectacular scenery in pure comfort and relaxation. At day’s end you can moor near a sandy beach, cook up your catch and enjoy a sunset campfire.

A cruise, either self guided or at the hands of an experienced tour operator, will be a highlight of your visit to the Riverland.

Possums and Koalas

Walk or ride Renmark’s idyllic riverfront with the kids. You can start the track from any point but a good reference is the visitor centre which is about half way. Along the way the kids could spot a koala or see the historic Paringa bridge lifting to let through river traffic.

Then take the scenic drive via Headings Cliffs Lookout to Woolshed Brewery to enjoy a local brew while the kids uncover the rustic gardens setting and river views and collect a gourmet picnic hamper from Ruston’s Rose Garden to take with you.

Consider a stop in Paringa on your way back where you can wander through Cammies Antiques or perhaps enjoy afternoon tea at the local bakery and there’s a playground for the kids.

There’s lots of dinner options with restaurants and takeaways walking distance to Murray Avenue where cheeky possums come out on dusk for feeding which the kids can see close up.

Saturday Morning Fun

Every Saturday morning you’ll find regular kids activities at the Riverland Farmers’ Market and cooked breakfasts, locally roasted coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice.

The short drive to Loxton is gorgeous with cropping land as far as the eye can see and roadside vineyards, wineries, oranges, almond groves and rustic farm gate stalls that pop up selling locally grown seasonal fruit and veg.

Loxton boasts lovely country shopping and if you walk to the top of the main street you’ll find the river and the entrance to the Loxton Historical Village.

As one of the Riverland’s must see, must do attractions the whole family can enjoy the village with over 45 period buildings and exhibits.

Assuming the day hasn’t escaped you already there’s a great indoor playground at the Loxton Club where mum and dad can sit and enjoy a coffee while the kids play and it’s an ideal early tea option with a full club style menu.

There’s a short, medium or long boardwalk with good pram access and on your return you can enjoy their full regional produce menu on the deck that overlooks a magnificent panorama of the wetlands while the kids are occupied by free colouring in and the aquarium.

A short distance from Banrock is the option for a 3-hour eco cruise or if you drive a bit further to Waikerie you’ll find jet ski hire, horse riding and the Riverland’s own dessert bar.

We definitely suggest taking the scenic drive home or onward on your journey by crossing the free river ferry at Waikerie where the kids can get out and have a closer look at this unique river vessel in action.

There’s a chocolate shop across the road for a quick treat or call into Muller’s Meats on your way out.

Follow the scenic route to Bella Lavender for a game of putt putt and light lunch with a whole lavender farm for the kids to run around in.

Head over to Lake Bonney which is idea for swimming, fishing or a walk along the foreshore although it’s not hard to spot Barmera’s Playspace from here which now boasts a fantastic bike circuit.

We suggest dinner on the foreshore with takeaway options in the main street or making good use of the free barbecues near the playground.
