About Us

Destination Riverland is the peak regional tourism body in the Riverland of South Australia.

We were established in October 2011 and immediately set about developing a 3 year Strategic Plan to grow tourism and boost our economy by increasing visitor numbers to this great river tourism region. The vision for Riverland tourism is — “Confidence in tourism investment and excellence in tourism operations.”

Our Board is chaired by Peter Walker, and comprises seven local business leaders from across our region. Our board members are: Deb Alexander, Miriam Griffen, Matt Major, Brenton Pankhurst, Garry Pinnington, Peter Walker, Jenny Semmler and Hayley Ramsay. We employ a General Manager, Tony Sharley, who is a passionate Riverlander with international experience in environmental marketing and wine tourism.

Since 2011 we have met bi-monthly and held our meetings throughout the Riverland. We have a strong working partnership with the SA Tourism Commission and the four Councils that cover the Riverland tourism region. Our industry partners are growing as we work to support tourism operators by promoting the four major experiences that the region offers — food and wine, river and nature, history and heritage and art and culture. Destination weddings, backpacking and bird watching are growing markets for the region and they add to our already strong markets for water sports, golfing, house boating, canoeing, fishing and camping.

This new website provides an opportunity to take these experiences and products to the world via a new benchmark in on-line excellence.

Our new Riverland brand was launched in February 2013 — the colours reflect our rich orange landscapes, ochre cliffs and evening sunsets, the green swirl symbolises the Murray River and the colours of the floodplains and mosaics of irrigated crops flanking the river valley. The shimmer reflects the warmth of our climate and our people.

Tourism must continue to be a significant business opportunity for our region as Destination Riverland says with pride — “we have it all” — the largest river in Australia meandering through 362 kilometres of broad floodplain, floodplains that link to the outback, strong connections to our cultural and pioneering past, settlers from all over the world living in 20 proud river towns, magnificent red gum forest landscapes and spectacular coloured cliffs, a warm Mediterranean climate and clear skies illuminated by the stars at night, the birthplace of irrigation and fruit growing in Australia, a tourism reputation built on houseboat river holidays, spectacular events, a proud sporting history, an integrated wine and food culture and a secure water outlook.

Destination Riverland was founded by the four Councils in the Riverland Tourism Region together with Regional Development Australia (RDA) Murraylands and Riverland who were determined to ensure that our proud river towns and tourism operators benefit from the presence of an independent regional tourism body. The four Councils provide the foundation funding that enables Destination Riverland to build new funding partnerships.

Destination Riverland is grateful to the RDA and the Councils of:

• Renmark Paringa, Mayor Neil Martinson

• Berri Barmera, Mayor Peter Hunt

• Loxton Waikerie District, Mayor Leon Stasinowsky

• Mid-Murray, Mayor Dave Burgess

Our tourism industry is made up of more than 200 tourism businesses providing accommodation and experiences that help to strengthen the Riverland economy. Many Riverland residents today were once visitors to the region themselves — such is the appeal of the region’s climate and lifestyle. Our industry is strengthened by many proud Riverlanders who regularly host their friends and relatives and become great ambassadors for the region, and we hope this website will help to keep them informed of new and exciting things to do here.
